A man has appeared in court facing nine charges amid an ongoing investigation into a gang war which has spread across Scotland’s two largest cities.

John Callaghan was arrested after armed officers intercepted a vehicle in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, charged with a number of offences including housebreaking, two counts of motor vehicle theft, driving whilst disqualified and uninsured, and attempting to smuggle a personal communication device into a prison.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody.

Callaghan is due to make his second appearance within the next eight days.

Police Scotland have said arrested over 25 people in connection with the criminal feud which began in March after two homes were targeted by gunmen.

DCS David Ferry previously stated the operation is the biggest in the country in terms of resources and “the most significant in Scotland”.
