A man is to stand trial accused of a hit-and-run murder bid on a police officer.

Lewis Mackie is said to have carried out the crime in Dumbryden Gardens in Edinburgh’s Wester Hailes area on December 6 last year.

The 22-year-old was allegedly the driver of a stolen car when he initially reversed the vehicle at speed at the officer.

Prosecutors claim the officer was struck, causing him to be pinned between the door and chassis of the vehicle.

The officer is said to have been dragged before the car struck another vehicle.

The attempted murder charge states the constable fell to the ground, all to his injury and danger to his life.

Mackie also faces other road traffic allegations, including failing to stop at the scene.

The case called for a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday.

Ewen Roy, defending, offered a guilty plea on Mackie’s behalf, with the attempted murder accusation being deleted from the charge.

This was rejected by prosecutor Alex Prentice KC.

Mr Prentice went on to state that the incident was captured on CCTV.

The advocate depute said he believed a trial could be completed within three days, even taking into account time for selecting jurors.

Lord Arthurson went on to set a trial scheduled to start in February 2026 in Edinburgh.
