An officer was struck by a car while trying to stop a stolen vehicle on Dumbryden Gardens, Edinburgh.

A man has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder a police officer.

Lewis Mackie, 21, is alleged to have tried to kill the policeman in Edinburgh on Friday.

Police Scotland said officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Dumbryden Gardens, Wester Hailes, at around 12.45am and a policeman was struck by the vehicle as it drove off.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

The car was found abandoned nearby.

Mackie, of Edinburgh, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.

He is accused of attempted murder and theft as well as a series of driving offences including driving while banned and without insurance and failing to stop when requested to by a police officer.

Mackie made no plea and was remanded in custody ahead of a further court appearance.
