An 84-year-old man has been charged after the death of a “beloved” gran in the Scottish Borders.
Emergency services were called to reports of the death of a woman at around 3.05am on Monday at a property on Wood Street, Galashiels.
Margaret Maude Hanson, 84, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that an 84-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death.
Graham John Hanson appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with murder.
He made no plea during his appearance.
Hanson was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.
He is due to appear in court again within eight days.
In a statement released through Police Scotland, Ms Hanson’s family said: “We are devastated at the loss of our mum and gran.
“Margaret will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her,” they said.
“We would ask that our privacy be respected at this very difficult time.”
Detective inspector Debbie Duncan said: “Our thoughts remain with Margaret’s family and friends, who are being supported by specialist officers.
“We would again ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”
