Stretch of M8 closed after car bursts into flames on motorway

The blaze was reported around 9.50am on Tuesday as traffic slowed to a standstill.

A busy motorway was closed after a car burst into flames in North Lanarkshire.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a car on fire near Harthill at junction six on the M8 on Tuesday morning. 

The blaze was extinguished and police said there were no injuries reported following the fire.

Traffic Scotland said the motorway was closed between junction five and junction six before reopening around 10.50am. 

However motorists have been warned that traffic remains heavy in the area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were alerted to reports of a car on fire on the M8 eastbound near Harthill at around 9.50am on Tuesday, April 26.

“There were no injuries reported and emergency services attended to extinguish the fire.”
