Farm workers helped fire crews extinguish a massive blaze in a crop field on Scotland’s hottest ever day.

Footage from Hadden Farm in Kelso shows trenches being dug to halt the flames in their path by tractors in a makeshift “fire break” on Tuesday afternoon.

Six appliances and over 30 firefighters from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) beat back the blaze with the help of workers after it became hard to control as temperatures soared across the country.

Seven miles away at Floors Castle, experts recorded the hottest temperature ever in Scotland when the 35C barrier was broken for the first time.

Crews spent almost three hours making the site safe, however over 400 square metres of charred and scorched land remains.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “We were alerted at 1.56pm on Tuesday July 19 to reports of a large fire in a field at Hadden Farm near Kelso.

“Operations control immediately mobilised six fire appliances to the location. Farm workers assisted in creating a fire break and firefighters extinguished the fire.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
