A racehorse was filmed making its escape through an East Lothian town after breaking free from a racecourse.

Ten-year-old Rufio was competing in the final race of the Virgin Bet Christmas Jumper Raceday in Musselburgh on Monday afternoon when he unseated his jockey.

The horse was caught on camera galloping through the streets of Prestonpans around two miles away still wearing his race saddle and number seven banner.

He was returned uninjured to the racecourse after being located by ground staff.

A spokesperson for Musselburgh Racecourse said it was an “extremely rare occurrence”.

A statement said: “A horse unseated its rider in the last race and made its way out of the racecourse.

“This is an extremely rare occurrence and happily the horse was returned unscathed to the racecourse by our ground staff after its short journey towards Prestonpans.”
