A 12-year-old girl has been taken to hospital after a group of children got into difficulty in water near Fife.

A rescue operation was launched after 12 got stuck at Tentsmuir Sands in Tayport, while taking part in the organised activity.

They were part of the Coupar Angus Youth Activities Group (CAYAG).

Emergency services, including the ambulance service, police and RNLI, attended the scene at around 1.40pm on Wednesday, but the children had already managed to get themselves to safety by the time a rescue boat had arrived.

However the 12-year-old had suffered from exposure to cold water and was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee as a precaution.

A police spokesman said: “At around 1.40pm on Wednesday, police and emergency services attended a concern for person call at Tentsmuir Sands, Tayport, where it was reported that a 12-year-old had got into difficulty in the water whilst kayaking with an organised group.

“She has been taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee as a precaution.”
