Firefighters are currently battling a huge blaze within a tenement building in Edinburgh.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire in Bailie Terrace in the east of the city shortly before 4.30am on Sunday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said its crews requested additional support after arriving to the “well-developed” blaze in the four-storey building.

A number of appliances are at the scene with crews making use of two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one high-reach appliance.

Police Scotland said all residents have been accounted for and are “safe and well”.

Inspector Keith Scott said: “All occupants of the building have been accounted for and are safe and well. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

The SFRS said it was alerted at 4.28am following “multiple calls” reporting a fire within a second-floor flat in a four-storey tenement building.

A spokesperson said: “Appliances were mobilised from Newcraighall, Marionville, and McDonald Road fire station and on arrival discovered a well-developed fire within the property.

“Crews requested further appliances to assist and further appliances from Musselburgh, Liberton, McDonald Road, Bo’ness and Tollcross were mobilised.

“Crews are engaged in fighting the fire with two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one high-reach appliance.

“The incident is currently ongoing.”
