Firefighters battle 'well-developed' blaze at Airth Castle

Six fire engines and one height vehicle were sent to the scene overnight on Monday.

Firefighters spent more than ten hours battling a “well-developed” blaze historical building in Falkirk on Monday.

Six fire engines and one-height vehicle were sent out to Airth Castle Hotel after the alarm was raised at 1am.

The former hotel has lain derelict since 2023 after its owners went into liquidation due to “unmanageable debts”.

Since its closure, the building has been subject to vandalism and break-ins.

For around 19 years it was used as a popular luxury venue for weddings, private parties and exclusive events as well as for its spa and grill restaurant.

The castle, which dates back to the 14th century, was once owned by the family of Robert the Bruce.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said no casualties were reported.

Police Scotland said in June that it had upped patrols in the area due to anti-social behaviour and fire-raising at the site.

An SFRS spokesperson previously said: “We are still in attendance at a fire within a two-storey derelict former hotel building in Airth, Falkirk.

“Four appliances remain on scene after the initial call came in just after 1am on Monday, 23 September.

“There are no reports of any casualties and currently there is no threat to the local community.

“Nearby residents may have seen water supplies impacted as we required increased levels of water to assist in tackling the fire.

“We will remain on scene until the incident is brought to a safe conclusion.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: “Around 1.40am on Monday, Septembe 23, we were called to a report of a fire at a building at Airth Castle.

“Enquiries will be carried out with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.”
