A fire has been brought under control at a historic sports clubhouse in Edinburgh.

The blaze gripped Myreside Pavilion, owned by private school George Watson’s College and used by Watsonians rugby club, on Wednesday morning.

Seven fire engines were sent to the scene as smoke billowed from the building, clouding Myreside Road.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control, and no one was hurt.

The school’s principal Melvyn Roffe said: “Regret to confirm that a fire was discovered at Myreside Pavilion this morning.

“No one injured and now under control.

“Thank you Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency services for your rapid and effective response.”
