A fire at a landfill site in Dunbar has been extinguished, it has been confirmed.

Valencia Waste Management, who run the East Lothian site, confirmed on Friday that the flames have now been put out.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are no longer at the scene and the Valencia team say they will remain on site.

The blaze broke out at the landfill site on Monday afternoon and continued burning for five days.

Residents and nearby businesses and schools were urged to keep windows and doors shut to avoid smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for Valencia said: “Valencia Waste Management confirms that the surface fire at the Dunbar landfill site has been extinguished this afternoon. Valencia’s team will remain onsite over the weekend to monitor the scene and ensure any smoldering is managed.

“We will now start the investigation into the cause of the fire and work with the fire service and SEPA, Valencia will share results of the investigation with the local community.”
