Family pay tribute to 'kind and loyal' dad Billy Watson, who died in 'targeted' shooting in Armadale

The family of a man who died in a “targeted shooting” has paid tribute to a “kind and loyal” father, brother and son.

Caitlinn Murphy, Billy’s Watson’s sister-in-law, who has known him for more than a decade, told STV News that “he had a smile that could light up any room.”

She said: “He loved to chat and have a laugh with everyone in our local community. We know how much he was loved. He was so very charismatic and such a funny man.

“He knew everybody and they knew him. He would talk to absolutely anybody.”

The dad-of-three was found injured by police at a property in Armadale on Saturday, September 12.

He died at the scene.

Police have since confirmed that the 35-year-old sustained fatal injuries consistent with being shot by a firearm.

On Friday, Frank McCarthy, 57, appeared in court charged with Billy’s murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. He has been remanded in custody.

A 29-year-old man and a 44-year-old man have also been charged in connection with the incident.

They are due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday. Police Scotland said enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Caitlinn added: “All of his family are heartbroken with this horrific incident especially his three daughters Tiana, Laicie and Charlee-Ann.”

A fundraiser set up to support the three girls has already raised more than £1000.

“We thought it would maybe help a little with covering the cost of flowers for Billy,” said Caitlinn. “We never expected it to grow this much. We’ve been overwhelmed with how many people have been kind and wanted to help.”

Billy’s family has organised a balloon release in his memory, due to take place on Saturday at 4.30pm at Watson Park, Armadale.

“The family would like anyone who knew and loved Billy to come and pay your respects and talk about any memories you shared with him,” said Caitlinn.

“The family are also so grateful for all your kind, lovely comments and the community’s contributions.

“He was funny, cheeky, caring and incredibly loving and incredibly handsome (or so he thought). He had a heart of gold and would have given his very last to anyone who needed it. He was the kind of person who would always try to help others, no matter what.

“Billy was a very special friend to many. There are countless people whose hearts have been broken by his loss, and he will leave an enormous hole in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him.”
