Factory with dozens of disabled workers facing closure after contracts withdrawn

It comes after the NHS and Scottish Government withdrew two contracts to manufacture nurses’ uniforms and digitise Government documents.

A factory which employs dozens of disabled staff is facing closure after losing two high-paying contracts.

Haven Products has had two contracts for the NHS and Scottish Government withdrawn, leaving staff fearing for their jobs ahead of Christmas.

The factory in Larbert, officially opened by John Swinney in 2015, operates as a charity that provides employment opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people.

The company said the loss of the contracts amounts to an annual revenue loss of £2m, which has left the factory facing closure.

Edward Moore, who has worked at Haven for eight years, said it’s the only job he’s ever had.

Mr Moore, who has autism, said he worries he won’t be able to find a job after previously struggling to secure employment.

“My worry is I won’t be able to find another job, and people might struggle to understand me and people with autism.”

Carol Brodie, who has worked with Haven since it opened, said she was a “nervous wreck” before starting her role at the factory.

“When I came in here, it all changed; I can function a lot better with this job; it’s quite supportive, and everyone is really friendly,” she said.

Following the withdrawal of the contracts, Ms Brodie says she feels “vulnerable” and that she doesn’t think she could get another job.

She added that it’s felt among all staff, saying, “everyone is really down and worried.”

Karen Motherwell, head of Haven Products, said the news had impacted the workers “significantly”.

“They have the security of employment with us, and our management has the skill set to work with disabled and vulnerable adults,” she said.

Ms Motherwell hopes the factory, which employs 60 people, can be saved with help from the Scottish Government.

“We’re hoping to brief MSPs on how serious the issue is. We need answers now, whether the contracts are reinstated or something else is in place to keep our employees in work.”

She added: “A lot of our employees have struggled to find employment before coming to Haven; they might not do well in interviews or be confident in engaging with others.

“So for a lot of our staff, it’s their first job, and they’re not wanting to lose that.”

Public finance minister Ivan McKee said: “We are working closely with Haven Products ensure the long-term sustainability and viability of their operations, and support the valuable contribution of their workers.

“We are actively exploring ways in which Haven can be supported in the short-term to remove the immediate threat of redundancies and options for a sustainable future.

“I met with the chief executive officer of Haven to highlight the Scottish Government’s support on this matter. We will continue to engage on next steps and I am committed to supporting the business to maintain employment.”
