Elderly man seriously injured in 'unprovoked' attack by youths in playground

An elderly man has been left with serious facial injuries after he was assaulted by a gang of teens at a playground in the Borders.

Police were called to Hall Street in Innerleithen around 7pm on Saturday following reports of the incident.

A 72-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment after being assaulted in the “unprovoked” attack.

The youths have been described as aged 13 to 16 and wearing black hoodies.

Police have urged anyone with information regarding the attack to come forward.

Detective sergeant Jamie Gilmore said: “This was an unprovoked attack that left an elderly man with serious injuries.

“Officers have been carrying out door to door and CCTV enquiries to try to identify those involved.

“The park was busy and we are asking anyone in the area at the time to come forward to help us with our enquiries.”
