Edinburgh Zoo has announced the arrival of an endangered zebra.

Oberon, a Grevy’s zebra stallion, arrived at the zoo from Chessington World of Adventures over the weekend, as part of a breeding programme for the at-risk species.

Keepers from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland are hopeful the new arrival will mate with Edinburgh Zoo’s resident females Azizi and Grace, before his return to Chessington in England at the end of the year.

His arrival means that the zoo is now home to four zebras – Azizi, Grace, and Daniella – and visitors can visit the latest stripy arrival at the hilltop habitat.

Grevy’s zebras are the largest wild equid and are the most threatened of the three species of zebra, and is currently classed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

They are particularly threatened by predators and poachers due to their size.
