An Edinburgh woman and her dog have died after they were struck by a car in Lincolnshire.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision involving a grey Seat Leon and a pedestrian on the northbound lane of the A1 at South Witham at around 9.35pm on May 9.

Despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, a 52-year-old woman died at the scene. A large dog also died following the incident.

The woman has since been named as Melanie Genrich from Peffermill Court in Edinburgh.

Detectives believe she left a broken-down Vauxhall Corsa parked in a layby north of the Fox Inn on the southbound lane alongside a man and their dog on the A1.

They walked over to the northbound lane before the incident.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been released under investigation.

A 58-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of murder; however, he has been released without charge and is no longer under investigation.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
