Edinburgh residents call for action over flat block's cladding following fire

Residents have urgently called for action after the block of flats was damaged following a fire in March.

Residents living in a block of flats damaged by a large fire have pleaded with the government to urgently replace its cladding.

Over 100 residents in the block of flats in Bonnington were awoken to a fire during the early hours of the morning in March.

Several residents had highlighted concerns of cladding material around the building in the years and months leading up to the blaze.

It had been identified as one of 105 buildings included in the Scottish Government’s cladding remediation programme.

A Bill has been passed making it easier for the Government to carry out the scheme.

Harry Williams owns a flat within the building.

Although the property didn’t suffer any severe damage, he feels unsafe with nowhere else to go due to being unable to sell his property.

He told STV News: “I don’t really have any other choice, I can’t move on anywhere, I can’t rent anywhere else, I can’t sell the flat.

“Literally I am stuck there. As for how I feel about it, it is very much a trapped life.”

Just a few weeks prior to the fire it was revealed that only two of the 105 buildings included in the Scottish Government’s cladding remediation programme had had work carried out.

The Housing Cladding Remediation Bill will make it easier for assessments and remediation works to be carried out on buildings affected.

Harry added: “It’s frustrating, especially because I think having seen some of the progress down in England.

“Every time you hear about the progress in England taking place, it’s heartbreaking in some ways to kind of know that we have made so little progress.”

The developers Persimmons said it has a contractors ready to begin remedial works as soon as a formal agreement is reached with residents.
