Edinburgh’s Princes Street has reopened after a bomb disposal locked down the historic thoroughfare on Thursday evening.

Officers were called to investigate after a man was seen acting suspiciously around 5.30pm and say they later discovered a bag at the scene.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts were called and a police cordon remained up overnight as a precaution.

Nearby buildings including Waverley Station were evacuated and some passengers using bus travel were disrupted by the incident.

The cordon was lifted at around 7.30am on Friday morning.

Police say that they are now probing the incident.

Superintendent Arron Clinkscales said: “Around 5.30pm on Thursday, November 10, 2022 we received a report that a bag that had been left unattended in Princes Street after a man was seen to be acting suspiciously.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were contacted and a cordon was put in place as a precaution.

“The bag was recovered and it posed no threat but we are carrying out enquiries. The cordon was subsequently lifted as soon as it was safe to do so.

“I would like to thank the public and local businesses for their patience and support while we dealt with the incident.”
