The driver of a stolen vehicle has escaped after crashing the car on the A71 near Edinburgh.

Police Scotland was called out at around 8.30pm on Thursday to reports of a one-vehicle collision close to the village of Burnwynd involving a red Renault Captur.

An image released by the force shows the car turned on its side and heavily damaged with parts strewn across the ground.

Officers said that despite assistance from police dogs and the air unit the driver managed to get away.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.30pm on Thursday, July 27 police were called to the A71 near Burnwynd, following a report of a one-vehicle crash involving a red Renault Captur.

“Enquiries have established that the vehicle had been stolen and there was no trace of the driver in the area.

“Officers are following a positive line of enquiry.”
