A fire at a derelict former hotel was set deliberately, police believe, as firefighters battled the blaze through the night in Falkirk.

Six fire engines and one height vehicle were sent to Airth Castle Hotel after the alarm was raised at 1am.

The former hotel has lain derelict since 2023 after its owners went into liquidation due to “unmanageable debts”.

Since its closure, the building has been subject to vandalism and break-ins.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said no casualties were reported following the blaze, with police treating the fire as ‘wilful’ following initial enquiries.

Police Scotland said in June that it had upped patrols in the area due to anti-social behaviour and fire-raising at the site.

The force is urging anyone with information regarding the fire to come forward.

Inspector Neil Wotherspoon, Grangemouth Police Office, said: “I’m appealing to anyone who has information about this fire to come forward.

“Were you in the area at the time and saw anyone acting suspiciously? Do you have private CCTV, doorbell footage or a dashcam which may have picked up anything of significance? If you do, please get in touch with police.

“We are also aware of a number of reports recently of people attending the former castle and hotel to take pictures and videos. I want to stress, this is extremely dangerous given the condition of the building and no one should enter.

“Officers carry out regular patrols of the area and there is fencing to restrict access. We continue to work with partner agencies to discuss deterrent options for the building.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 0200 of September 23. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
