'Deeply loved' woman, 24, dies in crash during police chase

Taylor Jenkins, from Edinburgh, died at the scene of the collision on the A19

Tributes have been paid to a Scottish woman who died in a crash during a police chase in England.

Taylor Jenkins, from Edinburgh, died at the scene of the collision on the northbound carriageway of the A19 in Sunderland at around 3am on Sunday.

The 24-year-old was a passenger in a white BMW M135 that failed to stop when instructed by police leading to a pursuit.

Officers from Northumbria Police had spotted the vehicle of interest travelling on the A184 in the Felling area of Gateshead.

The BMW, travelling south on the northbound carriageway, then collided with a grey Volkswagen Sharan travelling north.

The male passenger in the BMW – aged in his 20s – remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition, police said.

A man has since been charged in connection with the incident.

The incident has been reported to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is investigating the circumstances.

Paying tribute to Ms Jenkins, her family said: “Taylor was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can ever express.

“Her kindness, laughter, and beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and her memory will live on in all of us.

“During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for privacy and compassion as we grieve.

“We are grateful for the overwhelming support and kindness shown to our family.”

Sergeant Greg Huntley, of Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts firmly remain with all of Taylor’s loved ones, and we’d echo their plea for privacy, as we continue to support them.

“A male passenger from the BMW – aged in his 20s – remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.

“A man has since been charged in connection with the incident, so we’d ask the public to refrain from any speculation in the community and online.

“As is a matter of course in incidents of this nature, we have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who are conducting an independent investigation.

“Anyone with further info or footage can send us a DM or use live chat and report forms on our website. Please quote ref: NP-20260301-0122.”
