A date has been set for the inquiry into the death of a serial sex offender in an Edinburgh prison.
David James Reid, who was an inmate at HMP Edinburgh, died in hospital on June 22, 2023 after contracting Covid-19.
The 63-year-old was handed a life sentence in 2019 after he threatened his neighbour with a knife and raped her.
Reid was jailed for four years and three months.
However, the judge ruled that the sex offender could only be freed when the parole board decided it was safe to do so.
Prior to the conviction, Reid had been found guilty of numerous offences, including serious sex convictions stretching back to the late 1970s.
This included Reid being jailed for ten years for rape and attempted rape in 1998.
He was also previously guilty of indecent assault and having sex with a girl as young as 13.
A preliminary inquiry into the death will be held on January 8. The Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be heard on May 21 and 22.
An FAI occurs after all prisoner deaths.
Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on fatalities investigations for COPFS, said: “The death of David James Reid occurred while in legal custody and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.
“The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of a Sheriff.”
