Cars banned from streets around three more primary schools

Cars have been banned from the streets surrounding three more Edinburgh primary schools.

St Mary’s (Leith) RC, Gilmerton and Leith primary schools all joined the city council’s School Streets Scheme on Monday.

The scheme sees streets closed to traffic at beginning and end of each school day.

Pupils arriving at the gates of St Mary’s on foot were welcomed by Living Street’s mascot Strider as the school celebrated joining the charity’s year-round walk to school challenge.

Edinburgh transport and environment convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “It’s fantastic to see the initiative spreading to three more schools.

“I look forward to seeing a new generation of children making healthier travel choices and helping us to achieve our carbon neutral goal as a result.”
