A canoeist has died after getting into difficulties on a river in the Borders.

Emergency crews were alerted to an incident on the River Tweed near Kelso at around 3.30pm on Monday afternoon.

The Borders Water Rescue Team and a helicopter joined police, fire and ambulance crews at the scene.

A body was recovered from the water and officers confirmed the canoeist’s next of kin had been informed.

Detective inspector Jamie Gilmore said: “We were called around 3:30pm to a report of a canoeist getting into difficulty on the River Tweed, south of Rutherford, near Kelso, on Monday, March 22.

“Emergency services attended and a rescue operation was launched.

“A body was recovered a short time later and next of kin are aware.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, and as with all sudden deaths, a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
