Lowland League side Broxburn Athletic took on League Two side Edinburgh City at Albyn Park on Wednesday evening.

A Scottish lower league pre-season friendly was abandoned after a group of “youths” set off flares with police called to the stadium.

Lowland League side Broxburn Athletic took on League Two side Edinburgh City at Albyn Park on Wednesday evening ahead of the new domestic football season.

The friendly tie was forced to be called off following half time after a group of supporters were caught on video setting off flares before the game started.

Smoke began to fill the stands and spread across the pitch which delayed the kick-off.

On advice from attending police officers, the friendly was abandoned just after the interval and the crowd dispersed.

It is understood there were no arrests made following the disturbance.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.45pm on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, we were made aware of youths causing a disturbance at Albyn Park, Broxburn.

“Officers attended and following discussions the game was abandoned and the crowd dispersed.”

Broxburn posted on X: “Tonight’s match has been abandoned,” while Edinburgh City FC tweeted: “There has been a delay to the restart due to an ongoing disturbance.”

Edinburgh City FC and Broxburn Athletic have been contacted for comment.
