Apparent preparations for a terrorist gun attack in Scotland were investigated in a major multi-agency police operation.
In a report published by the National Crime Agency (NCA) – the equivalent of the UK’s FBI – the force revealed how it deployed specialist resources to help Police Scotland.
The counter terrorism investigation titled Operation Ferulic focussed on Edinburgh between October 2023 and March this year.
The NCA said the investigation, which was led by Police Scotland, centred on “the apparent preparation for a firearms attack in the Edinburgh area”.
The NCA provided forensic clinical psychologists, behavioural investigative advisors, a crime investigation support officer and interview advisors over several meetings.
The report details the NCA’s activities in Scotland between October 2023 and March 2024.
The force’s Major Crime Investigative Support (MCIS) provided advice and support to Police Scotland on 39 cases, and deployed officers on 46 occasions.
Cases included murder, rape, suspicious/unexplained deaths and missing persons.
It also supported the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in relation to assessing and managing risk, interview preparation and wider investigative suggestions and options.
It is not known if anyone was arrested or charged or what the outcome of the investigation was.
Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
