The Scottish Government’s headquarters has been evacuated following the discovery of a “suspicious package”.

The alarm was raised on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were supported by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts on site at St Andrew’s House on Regent Road, Edinburgh.

They later confirmed there was no threat posed to the public and the item was "innocent in nature".

Superintendent Mark Rennie said: "Police were called to St Andrew's House in Edinburgh after a suspicious item was found within the building.

"As a precautionary measure, in accordance with procedures, staff were evacuated from the building and a cordon implemented.

"Following examination of the item by Explosive Ordnance Disposal it was confirmed that the item posed no threat to the public and was innocent in nature."
