A controlled explosion has been carried out in Perth following the discovery of a “suspicious item”.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to Fairmount Terrace around 6.45pm on Thursday after the item was discovered within the premises.

An explosion was carried out as a precaution and was confirmed not to be a risk to the wider public.

Occupants and residents from buildings and properties nearby which had been evacuated have been allowed to return.

Police are expected to remain in the area while investigations are carried out.

A 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

The teenager has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
