Bomb squad called after 20-pound artillery shell discovered on North Berwick beach

Bomb disposal experts were called to an East Lothian beach after an artillery shell was discovered.

A member of the public contacted the North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team after spotting the item on the beach at Broadsands at around 9am on Monday.

When the coastguard attended, they contacted the explosive ordnance disposal unit, which sent a team to the location of the item.

A 100m cordon was put in place while the item, discovered to be a 20lb artillery shell, was x-rayed and removed from the beach for safe disposal.

The coastguard team said that the shell “could easily be mistaken for discarded rubbish”.

Anyone who finds an item they are concerned about on the coastline is urged to contact the coastguard.
