A man has been charged in connection with a raid on a Post Office where a female staff member was sprayed in the face with a substance for refusing to hand over money.

The shop, in Alloa’s Mill Road, was targeted at around 5.15pm on Thursday.

When the employees refused to give in to the robber’s demands, he sprayed the 44-year-old female worker and then attempted to assault her 25-year-old male colleague before escaping with a number of items.

The woman was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital for treatment, where the substance was found not to be harmful.

On Sunday, police confirmed a 40-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

He has also been charged in connection with a second robbery that took place in Stirling’s Abbey Road at around 7.40pm on Saturday night.

The man is due to appear in court on Monday.

Detective inspector David MacGregor said: “We have carried out a thorough investigation into the circumstances of both cases and I would like to thank the public for their assistance while our inquiries were ongoing.

“A 40-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the robberies and he is expected to appear in court tomorrow.”
