Amanda Knox says criticism of Edinburgh Fringe show is 'deeply uninformed'

Amanda Knox, who was falsely convicted of killing a British foreign exchange student, says critics of her Edinburgh Fringe show are “deeply uninformed”

Meredith Kercher was killed in Perugia in 2007, and her American roommate, Ms Knox, was arrested and later convicted of murder and sexual assault in 2009 alongside her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito.

The couple maintained their innocence and, after years of legal battles, were acquitted of sexual assault and murder by Italy’s highest court in 2015.

Ms Knox will now perform the show, named Cartwheel, which references a story that claimed she did cartwheels in the police station after her friend’s death, at this year’s festival.

The show is described as Ms Knox “juggling motherhood” and explaining the wrongful imprisonment in Italy to her daughter.

Kercher family friend Sally Allington believes the show is “making light” of the crime.

She told STV News: “This is actually about making light and making a comedy out of the rape and murder of any woman.

“It’s really not ok. It is abhorrent.

“I think it’s very distasteful.”

A petition has been launched to cancel the sold-out show before it begins on Friday.

However, Ms Knox thinks that those criticising Cartwheel are “deeply uninformed”.

“They have no idea what my show is about,” she told STV News.

“They are assuming a lot of false things about my show. That I am making light of a horrific thing that happened to a girl that I knew, and cared about.

“And they’re wrong. I think that they are coming from a place of deep concern, but I think all of my work in the past, leading up to now, demonstrates that I have never made light of anything that I have gone through and that Meredith went through.”

Ms Knox has previously shared her story in documentaries, an eight-part TV drama she produced with Monica Lewinsky, and books.

Rudy Hermann Guede was convicted of Miss Kercher’s murder in 2008. He was released from prison in 2021 after serving 13 years of a 16-year term.
