Passengers ‘stuck on tarmac for hours’ after all flights grounded at Edinburgh AirportiStock

Passengers say they have been “stuck on the tarmac for hours” after all flights were grounded at Edinburgh Airport due to an “IT issue”.

The airport released a statement on Sunday afternoon saying an issue with Air Traffic Control meant flights were grounded.

Many holidaymakers said they are “stuck” with some claiming to be sitting on flights on the tarmac for more than three hours.

Passengers on journeys with airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways are among those affected.

One passenger due to fly at 3pm from Geneva to Edinburgh told STV News: “Once we were all onboard and doors shut, the pilot announced there was an issue.

“They have kept us updated back and forth. We have been stuck on the tarmac for three and a half hours.

“Some passengers have young babies who are quite rightly getting upset.

“The staff on the flight have been amazing, offering water and snacks to everyone.

“The crew have been keeping children entertained and doing all they can but people are running low on patience now.”

Another said they were due to fly from Birmingham at 2pm and were still sitting on the runway after 6pm.

Others reported being diverted to Glasgow and other airports.

Edinburgh Airport said passengers should check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.

Engineers were working to resolve the issue – and after 7pm on Sunday, the airport said the glitch was resolved with flights resuming.

A statement on X said: “The IT issue affecting Air Traffic Control has now been resolved and flights have now resumed.

“Passengers should continue to check their flight status with their airline before travelling to the airport.

“We would like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding.”

Loganair said in a statement: “We are aware of ongoing Air Traffic Control issues affecting flights departing and arriving into Edinburgh.

“If you are currently at the airport please speak to our ground team who will be able to assist you with your travel plans.

“We advise passengers to check their flight status via https://loganair.co.uk/login/flight-status/ We will be in touch with any of our passengers who are impacted soon.

“We do thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Responding to a passenger query, Jet2 said on X: “We are working with Edinburgh Airport and the relevant Air Traffic Control teams to have you on your way as soon as possible.

“Our team will update you once your inbound aircraft has departed from Edinburgh.”
