A Scottish Gas Network spokesperson said: “Our engineers are carrying out emergency upgrade work to our gas main in the A985 Admiralty Road, between Dunfermline Road and Brankholm Brae Roundabout.
“This section of our gas main has come to the end of its useable life, so we are upgrading it to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local community.
“The road was closed to westbound traffic yesterday as our engineers successfully installed an overground bypass, to ensure continued gas supplies to thousands of local homes and businesses whilst we upgrade our network.
“Whilst we were carrying out work this morning a section of our old, existing gas main failed, causing a gas leak.
“For safety reasons, the road is now closed in both directions.
“All being well, we hope to have isolated the leaking section of our gas main before tomorrow morning and the road will re-open for eastbound traffic. The road will remain closed to westbound traffic as planned.
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this is causing and want to assure everyone we’re working as quickly as possible.”
