Staff at a forestry plantation have come up with a novel way to stop badgers from digging underneath a fence - by enticing them away with peanut butter.

Thousands of trees have been planted at Dreghorn, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, as part of Scotland’s Centenary Wood project.

A deer fence was erected to protect the sapling trees, however badgers have been digging underneath it.

The holes they leave behind make way for other wildlife such as rabbits to get into the site and damage the young trees.

To put a stop to this, rangers on the site have installed badger gates.

The creatures are being enticed to use the structures with a sweet treat of peanut butter.

So-called “badger cams” have captured footage of the animals being drawn to the peanut butter and going through the gates.
