Almost 200 new homes are to be built on the former Hall's factory site in Broxburn.

The VION/Hall's meat processing plant closed in February 2013, leading to the loss of 1700 jobs.

Planning permission for 190 houses was granted by West Lothian Council’s development management committee (DMC) on Monday.

The decision marks a fresh lease of life for the site, which has been lying empty since the factory was demolished.

The Bellway Homes project will be made up of two-storey houses, some of which will be affordable housing.

In response to the closure of the factory, the West Lothian Economic Growth Plan was set up to encourage investment in the area.

DMC chairman Alex Davidson said: “There has been investment within the local community and a huge focus on ensuring the town continues to grow and prosper.

“This is a positive chapter for the site and wider Broxburn community. The proposed development will bring an unsightly brownfield site back into productive use.”
