A laser pen was shone at an aircraft's cockpit during its final approach into Edinburgh Airport, police have revealed.

The incident happened at around 9pm on Wednesday night and involved a green laser being directed into the cockpit of the commercial flight as it prepared to land.

Police have said the source of the laser was later tracked to the north side of Musselburgh Racecourse.

Sergeant Laura White said: "Thankfully, the laser didn't affect the captain's vision but this was an extremely reckless act which could have had very serious consequences.

"We're conducting inquiries in the local area in an effort to trace the perpetrator and would ask anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour, or has information which can assist with the ongoing inquiry, to get in touch."

A similar incident occurred at Inverness Airport on Thursday, January 7, when a laser pen aimed at an aircraft as it was landing.

In 2014, Edinburgh Airport experienced 42 incidents involving lasers aimed at aircraft, with Glasgow Airport reporting 64 cases.
