Human remains found within the grounds of a property on the outskirts of Edinburgh include a skull.

Police are investigating after the discovery was made on Gogarstone Road, near Edinburgh Airport, at around 4pm on Saturday.

It is understood the skull was found within the grounds of 23-acre Gogar Mount House by a caretaker who alerted the police.

Other human remains were found a few metres away within the grounds of Gogarburn Golf Club.

Three holes on the club have also been closed off and the grounds searched.

A white forensic tent has been erected beside the ninth hole of the golf course.

Police said a detailed examination is now being carried out to determine the full circumstances.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Officers were called to Gogarstone Road at around 4pm on Saturday, January 9, following the discovery of human remains within the grounds of a property.

"A detailed forensic examination is now under way to establish the full circumstances surrounding this, and further updates will be provided when available."

Dundee University experts, renowned for recreating facial images based on human remains, have been brought in to help identify the victim.
