A man has gone on trial accused of raping a woman in Edinburgh's Meadows.

Steven Davidson,23, denies attacking the female, at the city's park on November 15, 2014.

Davidson, of Newtongrange, Midlothian, appeared before judge Lady Stacey on Monday at the first day of proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh.

A jury heard the contents of a legal document detailing a total of two charges against him.

Prosecutors claim Davidson approached the woman from behind whilst in the Meadows.

They claim he then placed his arm around her neck and this caused her to lose consciousness.

It is alleged he then seized the woman's neck and restricted her breathing before raping her.

The prosecution also claim that on November 14, 2014, at Nicolson Street and London Road, Edinburgh, Davidson was involved in supplying cannabis.

Davidson, who is represented by advocate Drew McKenzie, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Advocate depute Jane Farquharson is prosecuting the case for the Crown.
