Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has reached a 50% approval rating among registered Republicans for the first time, according to a recent NBC News/Survey Monkey poll.

The American businessman has won 22 contests in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries to date, and now commands a 6-point lead over rival Ted Cruz – the biggest weekly shift in the poll so far.

This recent poll is being seen as significant, given recent speculation on the limit of his support ahead of key closed primary votes that take place in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware on Tuesday.

Following Mr Trump’s success in New York, the polls could suggest national consolidation within the Republican party as support for John Kasich is down 15% with Ted Cruz (-28%) in recent weeks.
