A memorial mass will be held to mark one year since the death of murdered Irish student Karen Buckley.

Ms Buckley, 24, was bludgeoned to death with a spanner by Alexander Pacteau, 22, last April. He tried to dissolve her body in a bath full of chemicals. Pacteau was jailed for 23 years for the murder.

The anniversary mass will be held in Ms Buckley's home town of Cork in Ireland on Friday evening.

Prayers will begin at around 7.30pm at the Church of St Michael the Archangel in Mourneabbey in the town, led by Father Joe O'Keeffe, who has supported the Buckley family since the murder.

Former public schoolboy Pacteau lured the occupational therapy student from a nightclub in the west end of Glasgow to his car, which was parked round the corner.

He then bludgeoned the young student to death in his car before driving back to his flat, carrying her lifeless body inside and dumping her in a bath full of caustic soda in a bid to dissolve her body.

The killer then went to a hardware store to buy a large barrel. He put her body inside before driving to a farm in East Dunbartonshire and dumping the container.

A private service at Glasgow Caledonian University, where Ms Buckley studied, was held earlier this week to remember her.

During sentencing, Lady Rae said Pacteau went to extraordinary lengths to cover up his "senseless, brutal and motiveless" crime and said she could not envisage him being truly sorry for murdering Ms Buckley.

He even wrote down the fabricated story he told police so he would remember his lies. He is serving a minimum of 23 years for the murder.
