A search has been launched for a man who disappeared after not turning up to meet a friend.

Peter Holland, 46, was dropped off near a medical centre in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, at around 9am on Thursday. He was last seen in the town's Commercial Road, near to the Avondale Medical Centre.

Mr Holland had a few appointments that day and was due to visit a friend to drop off a tent. Police say inquiries have revealed that he did not contact his friend and when he failed to return home, his family contacted police and reported him missing.

He is described as white, around 6ft tall, with a slim build. He has brown hair, slightly balding, blue eyes and wears spectacles. Due to a previous medical matter, he walks with a limp.

When last seen, he was wearing a navy blue sweatshirt, brown hooded jacket, light blue jeans, black suede trainers, a black beanie hat and carrying a bag containing a tent.

Mr Holland has never gone missing before and has recently been dealing with some personal issues. He also requires medication and it is not clear if he has his medication with him.

Police say his family is "extremely distressed" at not hearing from him and want him home safe and well.

Sergeant James McLuskey said: "Peter has never gone missing before and we are growing increasingly concerned for his wellbeing.

"We are in the process of gathering and checking CCTV to trying find out more information as to where Peter may have gone or travelled to.

"Understandably, Peters family is extremely upset and just want to know he is OK. I am appealing to anyone who may have seen Peter or who has any knowledge as to his whereabouts to contact us.

"Anyone with information is asked to call officers at East Kilbride Police Office on telephone number 101."
