Dalziel were looking to get their first win of the 2011/2012 season as they played their first home game of the season against Ardrossan.

The game got off to a fantastic start for the home team with a period of continued pressure in the visitors’ 22.

A series of five metre line outs were successfully defended by Ardrossan before a missed pass to George Sloan allowed him to draw two defenders and offload to Robert Simpson who went over for the first try of the game.

Simpson was denied a second try minutes later when Harris made a half break and offloaded to McCallum who then put the fullback into space only for two defenders to bundle him into touch.

Dalziel continued to dominate play in the presence of a good home crowd and some good structured play led to an opportunistic second try.

Ross Donnachie attempted to dart round the side of a ruck in the Ardrossan 22, only to be met by two defenders, but on his way down he managed to slip an offload to Craig Simmonds who handed-off two defenders and then rounded the full back to score under the posts to make the score 14-0 at half time.

The second half saw Grant McCallum make some surging runs down the left wing from inside his own half, one of them leading to a second try for Simpson after McCallum’s offload fell to the ground and Simpson kicked it on and won the race for the touchdown.

With play again deep in the Ardrossan 22, the visitors took advantage of static back play by Dalziel as their fullback latched onto a wayward pass and linked up with two supporting teammates to run the ball under the posts for a try.

Once again, however, Dalziel took play back into the Ardrossan half with good work by the forwards at the lineout, driving the ball forward and sucking in Ardrossan defenders before switching play to the blindside with props George Sloan and David Irvine.

Sloan drew his defender in and passed to Irvine who stepped his way past his defender and decided against passing to winger Ross Westwood for a possible try, instead going himself and losing the ball in the tackle.

Dalziel’s next score came from scrum half Donnachie. Simmonds took a quick free kick from a scrum and offloaded the ball to Crawford Reid who then passed onto the scrum half and was faced with a huge gap in the visitors defence to waltz through untouched for a score under the posts.

Following this, Ardrossan enjoyed a spell of good pressure and territory in the Dalziel half, holding on to the ball with good phase play.

Good defence and a couple of turnovers at the rucks and lineouts allowed Dalziel to clear their lines. The home side had time for one last try before the final whistle, scored by Simmonds.

A good backs move allowed James Baxendale to venture into the Ardrossan 22 only to be brought down by the full back, but quick ball was moved to the wing where McCallum was also brought down short of the line, but quick ball again allowed Simmonds to bundle over from close range for his second try of the game.
