Budding young tennis stars bidding to be the next Novak Djokovic or Petra Kvotova will now be able to serve up some aces thanks to a new mobile indoor tennis court available for hire at the Ravenscraig sports facility.
The full size court has been set up in the athletics hall and is the only one of its kind in Britain.
It is made up of interlocking fibre tiles and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
The centre also boasts a mini court available for younger tennis players to enjoy and hone their skills on.
Blane Dodds, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure said: “Tennis is becoming more popular with the success of Andy Murray and the recent Davis Cup matches being held in Scotland.
“The more facilities we have like this, the better chance we have of producing more homegrown talent.”
In association with Tennis Scotland, North Lanarkshire Leisure also held a free tennis open day to give players and youngsters an opportunity to try out the court.
UK accredited coaches gave kids lessons and there was a serve inflatable, target walls, twisters and loads of other family activities on offer.
Mike Cohen, tennis development manager with Tennis Scotland said: “Indoor surfaces enable players to development their skills throughout the year no matter the weather conditions.
“The development of a court here at Ravenscraig will help further the long term development of the sport in this country and we would like to see more facilities like this around Scotland.”
Councillor Jim Logue, convener of Learning and Leisure Services with North Lanarkshire Council, added: “The new tennis court offers even more choice for our users and will encourage more people from the local community to get involved in the sport.”
The indoor courts are available for hire for £10 for adults and £5 for juveniles, per hour, per court. Tennis Academy lessons are also available for players aged eight and under. Bookings can be made by contacting 01698 274600.
