An elderly hillwalker whose two friends died after they went missing overnight is expected to be released from hospital.

Bobby Thomson, 64, went missing with Geoffrey Stewart, 74, and George Crosbie, 73, in hills in Dumfries and Galloway on Tuesday after the trio set off on a hiking trip.

A major search was launched in the hills around Durisdeer and the three friends were found with hypothermia the following day and taken to hospital. Mr Stewart and Mr Crosbie died shortly after.

The family of Mr Thomson released a statement on Friday saying he was in hospital following the "tragedy" and is expected to be released soon.

They said: "Our family would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families of George and Geoff following this tragedy.

"We are very grateful to all the services that were involved in the search and rescue and would like to thank them, and the staff at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, for all their efforts."

Police confirmed on Wednesday that the men had been found east of Durisdeer village and were airlifted to hospital.

Mr Crosbie was the first to die, shortly after being rescued, followed by Mr Stewart. Mr Thomson remains in hospital.

A statement from the family of Mr Stewart said: "Our family would like to extend our love and thoughts to the families involved at this very sad and tragic time.

"Sincere gratitude and appreciation goes out to all the services involved in the rescue efforts and hospital staff at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary."

Police Scotland said the procurator fiscal has been informed.
