A missing man was found dead two days after his crashed car was discovered a mile from the wreckage.

Jamie Donnelly, 29, was last seen in Lansbury Street, Greenock at around 12.30pm on Saturday before his car was found that night.

Hours later his empty car was discovered after a crash in Kilmacolm Road, near to Knocknairshill Cemetery in the town. The one-car accident was reported to the emergency services at about 8pm.

Police confirmed on Monday they found a body as part of the search. The body has not been formally identified yet but is believed to be that of Mr Donnelly and was found on Auchmountain Road, around a mile away from the crash scene.

It is understood the vehicle was discovered crashed through a fence.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Around 1pm on Monday, the body of a man was discovered in Greenock.

"Although formal identification has still to take place, police believe that it is Jamie Donnelly who had been missing from his home in Greenock since Saturday.

"Relatives have been informed and a full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
