A body has been found by police searching for an 83-year-old man who has been missing for over a week.

Matthew Bowie was reported missing on Sunday, January 24, from outside his home in Gleneagles Gardens, Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire.

Police launched a major search and appealed to the public for help in finding Mr Bowie. His family also made a public appeal for his safe return earlier this week.

Officers confirmed on Tuesday that a body has been found in woods in Bishopbriggs. It has not been formally identified but it is believed to be that of Mr Bowie.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "The body of a man was recovered in a wooded area in Bishopbriggs at around 10am this morning. The man is still to be formally identified, however it is believed to be Matthew Bowie.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious, however a post mortem will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death. Matthew's family are aware and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

"Media and the public are thanked for their assistance in the previous appeals."
