The mother of a teenager who died after it is believed he took MDMA at Hogmanay brought his friends to see him in his hospital bed to warn them of the dangers of drugs.

Lee Kelly, 19, from Croftfoot, Glasgow, died after collapsing at a dance event in the city during the New Year celebrations.

The teenager was found unconscious at 4am on January 1 at the O2 Academy in Eglinton Street before being taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he died two days later.

His mother, Vivien, 46, told STV News some of his friends came to the hospital and she took them to his bed to warn them about what drugs could do to someone. She said his friends and a doctor told her it is believed he had taken MDMA.

She said they were heartbroken when they saw him and added: "Lee has known a lot of his friends since nursery school. I told them to tell everyone they know what they saw so no other families have to suffer the way that we are. I don't want Lee's death to have been in vain."

Mr Kelly was at the venue to see Clyde 1 DJ George Bowie's GBX concert when he took ill.

His mother revealed how her son waved her goodbye before heading out and said his friends came to the door later to tell her he had collapsed after being unable to unlock his phone to call her.

She said: "He waved goodbye as he left on Friday and said 'have a good night mum'. His friends then turned up at the door a few hours after the bells as I was going to bed.

"I couldn't believe it. They had Lee's wallet and phone. They couldn't call me because the phone was locked so came to tell me that Lee had collapsed and was being taken to hospital.

"By the time I arrived, Lee was there being worked on by doctors. I didn't get to see him until later that morning. When I reached ICU, the doctor told me that there was very little they could do."

Vivien also revealed that she told her daughter that her brother was now a "star in heaven" and took her outside at night to point him out in the sky.

The Kelly family now plan to have a memorial service at football pitches where Mr Kelly went with friends.
