An oil worker has died in a crash between a motorbike and a van on a rural route in the Highlands.

Brent Larnach was killed when his vehicle collided with a van on the A99 Latheron to Wick road on Saturday.

The 28-year-old suffered fatal injuries in the crash, around one mile south of Thrumster, Caithness, at around 3pm.

A female passenger in the van also suffered serious injuries in the collision.

Fire fighters helped to release the woman from the van and she was taken to Caithness General Hospital for treatment.

The woman was later transferred to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for specialist treatment on pelvic and back injuries.

Mr Larnach, known locally as Freddy, lived with his father at Mid Clyth, near Lybster.

The road was closed for around six hours while crash investigators examined the scene.

Diversions were put in place via the A9 road at Quaywaymire.
