LONDON (Reuters) - BAE Systems has bid for the contract to upgrade the army's fleet of Warrior infantry fighting vehicles.

The bid was submitted on Tuesday, a day before the November 18 deadline, and is for the 1 billion pounds Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme (WCSP), which will provide the mainstay of the British army's frontline fleet in Afghanistan and future conflicts, the company said on Wednesday.

BAE, which is the manufacturer of the Warrior, said it had invested over 40 million pounds to develop a new design for the vehicle that meets the UK Ministry of Defence's protection requirements.

Shares in BAE, which have remained largely flat over the last three months, were 1.3 percent up at 330.20 pence by 10:30 a.m., valuing the group at around 11.5 billion pounds.
